Most electric scooter advice answers the question nobody asked. Spec sheets tell you the top speed. Reviews tell you the ride feel. Then you buy one and discover the questions that actually matter: do I need a license, what does this add to my electric bill, and can I ride it to work in the rain?

Do you need a license to ride an electric scooter?

In most US states, no. Electric scooters under 750W with a top speed of 20 mph or less are generally treated like bicycles: no license, no registration. But this varies more than people expect. A few states require registration, including Hawaii and North Carolina. Some cities layer their own rules on top, like minimum rider ages of 16 or 18.

The catch: the rules change if your scooter is fast. Models that exceed 20 mph can fall into moped territory in some states, which brings license and registration requirements with it. Before buying something in the 30+ mph class, check your state traffic code, not the seller's marketing page.

Where are you actually allowed to ride?

Bike lanes are the safe answer almost everywhere. Sidewalks are the opposite: most cities ban scooters from sidewalks entirely, and the tickets are real. Roads with speed limits of 25 to 35 mph are usually legal where bike lanes don't exist.

Two habits keep you out of trouble. Ride where a bicycle would ride, and treat pedestrians like they own the sidewalk, because legally they usually do.

What does charging cost per month?

Less than you think. Here's the math on a Segway Ninebot MAX G2, which carries a 551 Wh battery. A full charge from empty uses about 0.55 kWh. At the US average of about 17 cents per kWh, that's 9 cents per charge.

Charge it every night for a month and you've spent under $3. A year of daily commuting costs about what one tank of gas does. The battery is the expensive part, not the electricity.

How far do they really go on a charge?

Take the spec sheet range and multiply by about 0.65. Manufacturer numbers come from ideal tests: a light rider, flat ground, low speed, warm weather. Real commuting has hills, stops, wind, and a rider who wants to get there.

A scooter rated for 34 miles delivers 22 to 28 in mixed riding. A budget model rated for 15 delivers 9 to 12. This is normal, not a defect. Buy range with a buffer: if your round trip is 12 miles, a 15-mile rated scooter will leave you pushing it home some cold evening.

What happens in the rain? And winter?

Check the IP rating before riding wet. IPX4 means splash resistance: fine for damp roads, not for storms. IPX5 handles water jets, which covers real rain and puddle spray. Nothing handles standing water, so don't ride through the flooded intersection.

Wet pavement also roughly doubles braking distance on small wheels. Slow down earlier than feels necessary.

Winter is a range story. Lithium batteries lose 20 to 30% of their capacity below about 40°F, and the loss is temporary but real. How much maintenance do electric scooters need?

Less than a bike, more than nothing. The monthly routine takes ten minutes: check tire pressure (soft tires cut range and handling), squeeze-test the brakes, and check that the folding mechanism and stem bolts haven't loosened. Firmware updates come through the app on connected models.

Tires are the main wear item. Pneumatic tires ride better and grip better but can flat; self-healing tubeless designs split the difference. Solid tires never flat but transmit every crack in the pavement. Expect brake pads to need attention somewhere past the 500-mile mark depending on terrain.

How do you keep one from getting stolen?

A folded scooter is a 40-pound grab-and-run target, so the goal is making yours the slower option. Use a U-lock or folding lock through the frame or folding mechanism, not a cable, which bolt cutters treat as decoration. Lock it to something anchored.

App-connected models add a second layer: remote lock that triggers an alarm and motor resistance if the scooter moves. It won't stop a van and two people, but it ends the casual theft. For anything you park outside daily, the lock is not optional equipment.

Do you need insurance?

Usually not required by law, but check two things. First, some homeowners and renters policies cover scooters as personal property against theft, which matters more than liability for most riders. Second, a few cities and states are starting to require liability coverage for faster classes. A five-minute call to your existing insurer answers both.
